How has being part of the AVID community strengthened you as a leader?

Being part of the AVID community has sharpened my leadership by grounding me in a clear vision of equity and access for all students. It has pushed me to lead with intentionality, focusing not only on academic outcomes but also on building a culture where teachers and students feel empowered to take risks, collaborate, and grow. AVID has challenged me to model what it means to be a lifelong learner and to use data-driven reflection to improve systems across the school.

What has been key to successfully implementing AVID in your school?

The key has been consistency and buy-in. We started by ensuring that every staff member understood that AVID is not a program that sits on the side, but is a schoolwide approach that impacts every classroom. Professional development, modeling WICOR® strategies, and creating space for teachers to share successes have been crucial. In addition, setting high expectations paired with the right supports has helped students see AVID as a pathway to real opportunities beyond high school.

What impact has AVID had on your school community—from staff to students?

AVID has transformed the way our school community approaches teaching and learning. Teachers now intentionally embed strategies that promote organization, inquiry, and collaboration into their daily lessons, which has increased student engagement and achievement. Students have grown more confident in their ability to advocate for themselves, set long-term goals, and take ownership of their learning. Beyond academics, AVID has strengthened our culture of high expectations and mutual support. Staff and students alike believe in “the Warrior Way” of preparing every student for success in college, career, and life.
